Even in these times of high gas prices, when the president goes somewhere by motorcade, he goes in force. And that’s even more true when he’s going with other world leaders.
On Thursday, the president and Irish prime minister drove the 16 blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to the Capitol in one of the bigger motorcades — 20 official vehicles, accompanied by 11 police motorcycles and seven police cars. That’s in addition to the police that weren’t part of the motorcade, but helped block off traffic on cross streets.
The motorcade breakdown:
7 cop cars
4 presidential limousines
10 sport utility vehicles
2 vans for staffers
2 vans for the press pool that follows the president
1 communications vehicle
On Monday, President Obama took a 16-vehicle motorcade to go the few short blocks from the White House to the St. Regis Hotel at 16th and K streets, according to Alaska Public Radio Network’s Libby Casey, who served as pool reporter that day.
