The co-chairs of the new deficit supercommittee said Friday they will hold their first organizational meeting next Thursday and their first public hearing the week after, on Sept. 13.

Both the organizational meeting and the hearing will be open to the press and the public, said Rep. Jeb Hensarling and Sen. Patty Murray, the Republican and Democrat who have been tapped to lead the committee as it seeks to find $1.5 trillion in new deficit reduction over the next decade.

At the hearing, the 12-member panel will hear from Douglas Elmendorf, director of the Congressional Budget Office, who will review for the committee the reasons why the debt has exploded in recent years.
