After days of being accused of acting timidly with the IRS, President Obama will meet Wednesday with Treasury Department officials to discuss punishing those responsible for the agency targeting conservative groups.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said the president will talk to Treasury officials about “making sure that people are held accountable for their conduct” and to ensure that the behavior doesn’t happen again. But he wouldn’t say whether the president wants acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller or anyone else to be fired, saying only that Mr. Obama expects there to be “consequences.”

The Justice Department is opening a criminal probe of the IRS after an inspector general’s report concluded the agency engaged in “inappropriate” targeting of conserative groups seeking tax-exempt status, such as tea-party groups.
Mr. Obama had been hesitant to criticize the agency even after a top IRS official apologized for the behavior. After the IG report was released late Tuesday, the president called the IRS actions’ “outrageous.”
