Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is touting the support of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans in his 2014 re-election bid as a new poll conducted for a liberal group puts him in a dead heat with Democratic Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.
The federation voted unanimously to endorse him at a retreat in Elizabethtown over the weekend.

“As a former College Republican chapter chair, Senator McConnell has offered unwavering support for the College Republicans, and his firm conservative voting record is an asset to the great Commonwealth of Kentucky and the conservative movement,” said Wesley Scott, chairman of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans.
Mr. McConnell said he’s “truly grateful” to have their support.
“As one of the largest grassroots organizations in the state, this group of bright young Republicans plays an influential role in politics across the Commonwealth,” he said. “I am proud to stand with the College Republicans as they will one day be the leaders guaranteeing the future successes of the Republican Party.”
Mr. McConnell is facing a primary challenge from businessman Matt Bevin, who touted support from former Republican gubernatorial candidate Larry Forgy Tuesday.
Ms. Grimes is running against Mr. McConnell on the Democratic side. A new poll conducted by Lake Research Partners for the liberal group MoveOn.org shows Mr. McConnell and Ms. Grimes tied at 37 percent apiece and Mr. McConnell leading Mr. Bevin, 50 percent to 17 percent.
The poll of 603 likely voters was conducted from Oct. 24-29 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
