The WNBA just announced the starting lineups for the All-Star game on July 25, and Mystics guard Alana Beard will be starting for the Eastern Conference.

Beard is fourth in the WNBA with 19.1 points a game and third with 3.0 steals a game. It is her fourth selection and will be her second start, although the first time she was voted a starter. In 2006, she moved into the starting lineup because of injury.

The East’s other starters are Indiana forward Tamika Catchings (the top vote-getter with 94,316) Indiana guard Katie Douglas and Chicago’s Candice Dupree and Sylvia Fowles.

The Western Conference starters are Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon (the leading vote-getter in the West); a trio of Seattle Storm players: forwards Lauren Jackson and Swin Cash and guard Sue Bird; and L.A.’s Lisa Leslie (although because of her knee injury she probably won’t play).

A bit surprising that neither Diana Taurasi nor Cappie Pondexter - the top two scorers in the league - cracked the West’s starting lineup, especially since Phoenix is in first place. But it’s hard to argue with Bird and Hammon.
