There were a couple interesting tidbits from my conversation with coach Julie Plank for today’s print edition story that got left out. So I thought this would be a good spot to share it.

Q: What was your impression of the Mystics franchise before you interviewed here?

A: “I knew that it was a great place to play, there’s a lot of excitement here. I thought Alana Beard was a franchise player. I think that’s important when you’re taking over a head coaching position. Players that have been here, I’ve always heard great things about playing in D.C. That says a lot — I knew that I could attract free agents and that people would want to be here.”

Q: Are you surprised that it has clicked so quickly with this team considering all the new parts?

A: “They want to be good and that’s really important. I think Alana would do anything to win. They were hungry, the people coming in have high expectations and they’re winners. They want to be challenged, they want to get better and I did feel a connection right away. I remember telling our team before our first game, ‘I just love this group. I don’t care how many games we win, I love this team.’ I think now it’s just a challenge of keeping people together and continuing to improve. Now that we’re 4-1, I think people are taking notice of us and we have to be even more ready.”
