Vice President Cheney on Wednesday canceled a trip to Illinois after doctors discovered an “abnormal” heart rhythm during a routine examination, the vice president’s office announced.

Mr. Cheney was scheduled to visit George Washington Hospital on Wednesday afternoon “for an outpatient procedure to restore his normal rhythm,” said Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell.

Ms. Mitchell said that on Wednesday morning, physicians found “a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart.”

The condition is not an emergency, but required that Mr. Cheney cancel a planned fundraiser in Homer Glen, Ill., for a Republican congressional candidate.
