Four hours after Albert Haynesworth finished his welcome to Washington press conference and less than 22 hours after DeAngelo Hall opted to re-sign minutes before free agency began, the Redskins found their new left guard in an old friend when they signed Derrick Dockery to a five-year, $26.5 million contract that includes $8 million guaranteed.
Dockery, a third-round pick in the 2003 draft, started four years for Washington before leaving for Buffalo’s seven-year, $49 million offer in March 2007. The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Dockery, 28, was cut by the Bills on Thursday and will reclaim the job filled the past two years by Pete Kendall, a free agent who won’t be re-signed.
Haynesworth’s $7.9 million salary cap cost and Hall’s $5.2 million left Washington about about $1 million under the cap, far from enough to afford Dockery. So defensive end Jason Taylor might have to re-work his $8 million base salary mostly into signing bonus to save nearly $6 million.
