A league source confirmed earlier this hour that the Redskins have signed QB Andre Woodson to the practice squad.

The team still has two open slots on the practice squad, and I expect those to be filled by the time practice starts Monday at 1 p.m.

Woodson could turn out to be a big help this week for the Redskins.

He spent last year and this training camp with the New York Giants.

The Redskins play at the Giants Sunday.

The first thing Jim Zorn should do tomorrow is bring Woodson to the defensive staff room and said, “Tell us everything about the Giants’ offense.”

Who knows what that kind of knowledge will do for Greg Blache and Co.

Long term, Woodson — whose agent Joel Segal also represents Jason Campbell — could challenge Colt Brennan next training camp. He certainly has the size (6-5, 240) but had a bad preseason (39 percent completion percentage and two INTs). The Giants opted to keep two quarterbacks, cutting both Woodson and Rhett Bomar. Bomar signed with New York’s practice squad.

Also, the fact three players who were cut Saturday went to other teams (Antonio Dixon to Philly’s 53-man roster, Chase Daniel to New Orleans practice squad and Cody Glenn to Indianapolis’ practice squad) should warrant a tip of the hat to the Redskins’ personnel department. In previous years, I don’t recall a lot of cut Redskins re-surfacing so quickly.
