Florida Governor Charlie Crist, now a declared Independent since leaving the Republican Party, told audience members during a campaign stop, “I used to be a Republican…thank God, used to be.” Mr. Crist is running for an open Senate in a three-way race against Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Kendrick Meek. Apparently, Mr. Crist’s attacks on his former Party could be backfiring. A recent poll released earlier this week by Mason Dixon, according to the Orlando Sentinel, shows that Mr. Rubio is currently five points ahead of the Florida Governor:

Republican Marco Rubio has nudged ahead of independent Charlie Crist in Florida’s nationally watched U.S. Senate race in a hypothetical three-way matchup with Democrat Kendrick Meek, according to a Mason-Dixon poll released Saturday.
Rubio led Crist in the poll 38 percent to 33 percent, with 18 percent for Meek and 11 percent undecided.
