From President Obama skeet shooting at Camp David to walking on the moon, photographs of key moments have served as evidence of proof — or fodder for conspiracy theories. Here is a look at some newsmakers over the years.

Controversy: The photo gave visual ammunition to Mr. Bushâ€™s detractors and political opponents, many of whom caricatured the president as, well, not so bright. Verdict: Fake. Comparison to an original Associated Press photograph shows that the bookâ€™s â€œupside-downâ€ cover was digitally altered.
