Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney chose to raise awareness recently about the most obvious thing in Washington: The Democrats’ control of the U.S. House of Representatives is in serious jeopardy.  Politico’s story “House Dem campaign chief warns the majority at risk without message reboot” amplified Mr. Maloney’s cry for help but made it clear that Democrats are in serious denial about the dire situation they’ve created for themselves.

Not only is history working against them - a new President’s party almost always loses seats in Congress in their first midterm election - but Democrats have the smallest majority in 100 years and can only afford to lose four seats to cling to their majority.  Because of the left’s radical agenda, it may turn out that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can’t plug enough holes in the dam to stop sizable Republican gains in 2022.  Even though House Republicans picked up seats in 2020, many more competitive districts out there are ripe for the taking.

The truth is that the problem for congressional Democrats extends far beyond a simple messaging tweak.  Just because the liberal media won’t cover the radical left’s dysfunction with the urgency and honesty it deserves doesn’t mean the American people don’t see what’s going on.  It’s no secret that the first six months of Democrat control of the White House and both houses of Congress has been an unmitigated disaster.  Back in January when Joe Biden was inaugurated, no one could have predicted the left would botch it quite this badly.

The Democrats’ master plan is to use the August recess to talk up their $1.9 trillion COVID-19 “relief” bill - more liberal wish list than COVID-19 relief in reality - in their home districts to show they’ve gotten something done.  They’ll undoubtedly revert to form and focus on COVID-19 lockdown fears and division when this falls flat.

While $1.9 trillion is a huge number, Americans don’t feel much relief from COVID-19.  New knee-jerk mask mandates, massive confusion from the CDC on vaccine messaging, and daily images of COVID-19 positive illegal immigrants pouring across our southern border are the order of the day.  If Democrats were serious about fighting COVID-19, they would fix the border crisis they created.  Until then, their credibility gap will only get worse because everyone knows the root cause of the illegal immigration problem is Biden’s policies.

But the Biden-Harris catastrophe at the border and their COVID-19 mitigation double standard isn’t the only thing on the minds of the American people.  Crime is on the rise across the United States, and the Democrats have no answer.  Hardworking American taxpayers want to know why the left spent the past year turning their backs on our heroic police and supporting the dangerous Defund Police movement.  The bottom line is when it comes to law and order and safe neighborhoods, the Democrat Party, is on the lam.

Constituents also want to hear from congressional Democrats about what they’re doing about soaring inflation.  This conversation won’t take long because the Biden White House chooses to ignore inflation and instead plow ahead with multi-trillion spending bills that will only worsen the situation.  A change in poll-tested messages by left-wing leaders won’t lower gas prices and the cost of groceries and other staples.

Furthermore, House Democrats must answer questions about teaching critical race theory in public schools.  Talking points from Washington trying to dismiss it as a conspiracy theory won’t work.  The teacher unions and the radical left are pushing this poisonous curriculum that teaches our youngsters to hate America and wrongly believe it’s a racist country.  Parents deserve honest answers about this important issue, but Democrats don’t have the guts to own up to it.  Moms and Dads also want to hear from congressional Democrats that schools are opening for in-person learning, and masks are coming off our children no matter what American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten says.

House Democrats are also hoping to tout the infrastructure bill that’s working its way through the Senate, but that may be wishful thinking. While the $1.2 trillion plan will likely pass in the Senate, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her socialist “squad” are threatening to defeat the bill in the House if the Senate doesn’t pass their irresponsible $3.5 trillion socialist wish list first.  The fate of both the infrastructure bill and the multi-trillion budget reconciliation boondoggle is far from certain. Failure on either measure would total a complete collapse for the Biden agenda.

The 2022 midterm elections are now just 15 months away, and the Democrats have nothing to show for it. Changing messages and focusing on better communications at this stage is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.  What the Democrats lack is a positive and innovative agenda to offer the American people.  And that’s why Republicans are well-positioned to return to majority status in Congress in 2023.
