As the world looks to 2027 and beyond, there are critical questions about what kind of actions China might take to coerce Taiwan or force unification.

Might Beijing quarantine or blockade Taiwan? Might it invade? What approach should Taiwan and the United States pursue?

To make sense of these questions and better understand key trends in China’s approach to Taiwan, Washington must not lose sight of the existential dangers looming in the Taiwan Strait. The U.S. should move quickly to reinforce its Indo-Pacific posture once the Iran conflict concludes.

The best solution to avert a catastrophic Taiwan Strait war is for the Trump administration to spell out its strategy for Taiwan before it is too late.

The year 2027 will be crucial for Taiwan. The U.S. should recognize the importance of preserving the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and reinforce its posture in the region after the end of the Iran war.
