District of Sports: What’s next for Maryland football after firing coach Mike Locksley?

Podcast

After a 2-5 start to his eighth season, Maryland has fired football coach Mike Locksley.

The District native’s firing comes on the heels of five straight losses: to Virginia Tech, UCLA, Nebraska, No. 5 Ohio State, and the latest, 37-30, to Rutgers on homecoming Saturday. Locksley is the first Power Four coach to be fired this season, and his termination marks the start of athletic director Jim Smith’s first major coaching hire since he took the job in summer 2025.

George Gerbo and Liam Griffin break down Locksley’s tenure in College Park: His successes — including three straight bowl victories from 2021-23 — and shortcomings — including going 2-20 in the last three seasons in the Big Ten — and the potential candidates that could succeed him.
