After briefing reporters on Tuesday’s elections Wednesday afternoon, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, along with his wife Maureen and several state officials, jetted off to Israel as part of an 11-day trade mission that will also include stops in India.

Also on the tour — Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng, Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore, Secretary of Technology Jim Duffey (India only) and officials from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Virginia Tourism Corporation, and the Virginia Department of of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

“As we continue to work diligently to bring new jobs and more opportunities to the Commonwealth, it is important that we explore emerging markets overseas to bring more business opportunities to Virginia and work to increase our exports into the global marketplace,” said Mr. McDonnell. “There is no better way to bring new companies to Virginia and sell more of our products to them than to personally tell the Virginia story to the heads of those companies.”

The trip is Mr. McDonnell’s third major international trade mission as governor. In summer 2010, Mr. McDonnell’s trip to Europe helped close an economic development deal that led to The Hornschuch Group investing $28.3 million in expanding its O’Sullivan Films operations in Winchester, among other developments. And earlier this year, in addition to attending the Paris Airshow, Mr. McDonnell led a trade mission to Japan, China and South Korea that has led to several economic deals, including exporting Barboursville wines to China.

The governor and state officials will meet with business leaders in Tel Aviv, Mumbai, Bangladore and New Delhi, and Mr. McDonnell is expected to announce an Indian agriculture and forestry export initiative and introduce the state’s new trade representatives to India.
