Former GOP presidential candidate John McCain gave his support Monday to fellow party member Robert Ehrlich in his attempt to retake the Maryland governorship.

Mr. McCain said after a meeting at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., that Mr. Ehrlich is a “fine guy” and has his endorsement, according to the Associated Press.

In the state’s GOP primary Tuesday, Mr. Ehrlich faces business investor Brain Murphy, who has been endorsed by Sarah Palin, Mr. McCain’s running mate in 2008.

Mr. Ehrlich is expected to win the primary, then continue in what polls show is a tight race with incumbent Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley, who defeated Mr. Ehrlich is 2006.
