Public confidence in the economy is at its lowest point in six months and most Americans think things are only getting worse, according to a poll released Tuesday.
The Gallup Economic Confidence Index found that 62 percent of people surveyed say the economy is getting worse while just 33 percent say it is getting better. The 29-point difference corresponds to a minus-29 score on the index.
The score is the lowest recorded by the index since January, when pessimists also outnumbered optimists by 29 points.
Past polls have shown that economic confidence steadily grew from a minus-52 index last fall to just a minus-16 gap in late May. However, pollsters said numbers have declined since then due largely to disappointing job reports and lackluster gross domestic product growth during the second quarter.
The most recent poll showed that Democrats have a much more positive view of the economy than Republicans, as Democrats had a plus-5 index this month compared to minus-56 for Republicans.
