PLAYER TO WATCH: Varlamov. The Avalanche targeted the 23-year-old goalie and nabbed him from the Washington Capitals for a first- and a second-round pick. Colorado put so much faith in him that it cut ties with last season’s goalie tandem of Budaj and Elliott, and signed Varlamov to a three-year, $8.5 million deal. Giguere is the veteran backup.
