ANNAPOLIS —- Six Navy kickers were slotted as co-starters this week, which was a nice way of saying the Midshipmen have no idea who will kick in their opener on Sept. 1.
At some point, though, the Mids will need to narrow the field a bit. And that day appears to be coming soon.

“Probably next week,” coach Ken Niumatalolo said Wednesday. “We’ll go through this scrimmage, our last big evaluation. then we have two weeks to hone in on a lot of things.”
Half of the competitors for the job are freshmen —- Austin Grebe, David Reisner and Nick Sloan —- and concerns about the condition of their legs after plebe summer have not entirely been fulfilled.
Nonetheless, Navy is still being careful about a group that will probably yield the Mids’ long-term kicker —- and possibly its short-term option as well.
“They’ve actually kicked OK,” Niumatalolo said. “The accuracy has been a little inconsistent. As far as pop in their legs, we try to be careful and monitor how much they kick. When they got to the turf field, we don’t want them to kick all the time.”
