Caprio bested Michael Graham (three starts last season) and Raphael Ortiz for the job.

“Mike Graham had a little bit of a setback and tweaked his ankle about a week ago,” coach Jimmye Laycock said. “The nature of that put him a little behind. For the last week, it’s been pretty much Caprio and Ortiz. I feel like Brent deserves the chance to start. He’s certainly done everything we’ve asked him to do in practice.”

Caprio started four games last season, tossing six touchdowns and seven interceptions while appearing in some capacity in every game for the Tribe.

Caprio threw for a team-high 795 yards in 2011 as William & Mary used three different starters. Caprio started the Tribe’s final three games last season.

* The most significant injury from preseason camp was linebacker Dante Cook‘s knee injury. Laycock said the senior, who had 64 tackles in eight games last year, will miss the opener.
