Maryland fullback Tyler Cierski will miss Saturday’s game against Connecticut with a concussion suffered in last week’s defeat of Temple.

Cierski left the game in the second quarter and was escorted back to the locker room by team personnel. Coach Randy Edsall revealed the specifics of the injury Thursday.

“He got his bell rung,” Edsall said. “He’s gotten better each day. He has not practiced. … He didn’t remember some things, so I would say he had a concussion.”

Maryland frequently used two-tight end alignments in the second half to account for the absence of the 6-foot, 255-pounder.

Former walk-on Jeff Hernandez will step in and handle the fullback duties. Edsall said it was highly unlikely freshman Kenneth Goins would play at this time.

“That would have to be a real emergency, emergency situation to use a guy like that at this point in time knowing you’re going to get Tyler back,” Edsall said. “Hopefully it’s not going to be —- I don’t think it’s going to be, according to what I’ve been told it’s not going to be a long situation. Plus we have Jeff Hernandez who we have confidence in. If we play 21 [two running back, one tight end] personnel, he’ll be the guy going in for 21.”
