Viktor Kozlov and Alex Ovechkin scored in the shootout to help propel Group A to victory against Group C in the second game of the Gaetan Duchesne Cup. Kozlov and Ovechkin beat goalie Daren Machesney, while Simeon Varlamov turned aside attempts from Michael Nylander and Chris Clark.

Group ‘A’ will play Group ‘B’ tomororw afternoon for the Cup. Nylander put Group C on the board first. After he fed Clark for a failed one-timer, Nylander picked up the puck in the corner and skated out into the slot before putting a wrist shot over Michal Neuvirth’s shoulder.

Kozlov knotted the scrimmage at one with a similar move from the other side of the ice. Chris Bourque put Group ‘A’ in front in the third period with a blast of a one-timer from Andrew Gordon. Jay Beagle — who got into a bit of a dust-up with Kyle Wilson after Wilson didn’t like how Beagle put him into the boards — collected the puck and fed Gordon, who sent a perfect pass to Bourque.

With Group ‘C’ on the brink of elimination, Clark forced the shootout in the waning moments of the third. He slipped behind the defense on a line change, and Mike Green sprung him with a cross-ice pass.

As for some general observations, the big boys stood out again, but that’s to be expected. Clark played very well and didn’t miss a hat trick by much. Green was also everywhere.

Sami Lepisto had a nice afternoon. He and Karl Alzner were paired together and both looked pretty good. Francois Bouchard and Mathieu Perreault had three 2-on-1s (one that Neuvirth made a fantastic stop on). The Bourque-Beagle-Gordon line played pretty well for Group ‘A’ and Josh Godfrey made a couple of nifty plays, one on a pokecheck after falling down and another on a long pass to spring Ovechkin.
