ESPN is reporting that the New York Rangers have signed Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy to a two-year, $3.5 million contract. Gilroy was considered to be one of the prize catches from the NCAA free agent market that was especially flush this year with Gilroy, Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson (both now Maple Leafs) as the headliners.

The obvious question is, will the Caps being seeing Gilroy at any point in the next six games? The answer is no — he cannot join the Blueshirts until next season. But if he is as good as advertised, don’t be shocked to see him in the lineup the first time these teams play in 2009-10.

From walk-on forward at Boston University to Hobey Baker-winning defenseman (helping BU win the national title here in the District last weekend) to the New York Rangers — someone get some Hollywood writers on the phone.
