Yesterday morning I asked Bruce Boudreau how many goalies the team was going to take to California. When he said they hadn’t decided yet I suspected it was Semyon Varlamov, and not Michal Neuvirth, who was in jeopardy of not going.
Turns out that was true. Varlamov has been assigned to Hershey. It isn’t officially a conditioning assignment, but only because Varlamov is on his rookie contract and doesn’t need to be designatged as such. He can play two games for the Bears this weekend and then rejoin the team next week.

A team official said Arturs Irbe will join Varlamov in Hershey to monitor his progress. Given the way Jose Theodore played last night, it would certainly seem like Neuvirth is going to get at least one more start. If he were to play really well again, then the Caps might have an interesting decision to make next week.
