GM George McPhee just met with us for a few minutes, and here are a few of the key points:
* The Caps will move forward with one of the kids as the backup goalie — “That’s the plan,” McPhee said. He also said the team is not interested in any goalies from outside the organization (Manny Legace’s name was brought up).
Simeon Varlamov was expected to miss 7-10 days with minor knee injury, and he is expected to see a doctor today to make sure he won’t miss more time. McPhee said Neuvirth will play and it isn’t a given that Varlamov will come up when he’s healthy.
* Viktor Kozlov will not play tomorrow night. McPhee said the injury isn’t serious, and he might have been told to not play tomorrow if he was ready. The Caps don’t play again until Wednesday in New York.
* McPhee said the Caps’ pro scouts liked Staffan Kronwall, and he is a cost-effective way to add another puck-moving defenseman to the organization. He will cost the Caps about $87,000 the rest of the season. McPhee said he had a good first year in North American but has struggled with injuries since.
