Barack Obama’s speeches have a rhythm and lilt that are part of their appeal; he has made inspired use of quotes from the Bible to Abraham Lincoln to John F. Kennedy.

Earlier today, in his inaugural address, he even turned to one of Hollywood’s most incandescent triumphs, as he echoed the words Fred Astaire sang to Ginger Rogers in “Swingtime” — “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off.”

In this case he was exhorting Americans to join him in the difficult task that lies ahead, but could he possibly also have been thinking of the ten inaugural balls he and Michele Obama were about to face this evening?
