A top Obama campaign official insisted the president’s recent jab at presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for once driving with his dog on the roof of the family car was just a “lighthearted” joke.

“I’ll leave it for others to decide whether that was appropriate,” said Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter on ABC’s “This Week.” “It was a lighthearted remark.”

Mr. Obama picked up last week on a 30-year-old incident that continually has dogged the presumptive Mr. Romney, who once strapped a crate carrying his family’s Irish setter named Seamus to the roof of the family station wagon on a 12-hour trip to Canada.

Praising the potential of wind energy at a campaign event in Iowa, Mr. Obama slammed Mr. Romney for saying, “You can’t drive a car with a windmill on it.”

“I don’t know if he’s actually tried that. I know he’s had other things on his car,” he continued, chuckling.
