President Obama selected former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell Thursday to lead a U.S. delegation to Jamaica to celebrate the country’s 50th anniversary of its independence next month.

Gen. Powell, a Republican, is the son of Jamaican immigrants who came to the U.S. in the 1920s when the island was still under British rule. He will be joined in the delegation by Pamela Bridgewater, the U.S. ambassador to Jamaica, and Rep. Yvette D. Clark, New York Democrat.

The delegation will attend ceremonies in Jamaica on Aug. 6, the date the country gained full independence in 1962.
