Delegates driving to the Republican National Convention in Tampa next week will be greeted with a downtown billboard reminding them they’re visiting a Democratic city.

The billboard, which went up this week on Interstate 275 near downtown, says; “Welcome to Tampa! Where the mayor and all city council members are Democrats. Enjoy your visit!”

The sign was paid for by Ruth’s List Florida, a group dedicated to helping elect women to public office who support abortion rights, and can be seen on the group’s Facebook page at

Officially Tampa’s elected officials are nonpartisan, though all are registered Democrats. Mayor Bob Buckhorn is supporting President Obama’s re-election bid, though he says he’ll refraining from partisan politics until after the four-day Republican convention concludes Aug. 30.
