Focus on the Family’s public policy group is mailing out ads on behalf of Rep. W. Todd Akin, adding to the roster of conservative organizations helping out the Republican Senate hopeful as he struggles to make up lost ground against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

CitizenLink, an arm of James Dobson’s Focus on the Family, has spent $52,000 on direct mail in the Missouri Senate race, according to federal election filings posted Tuesday.

As he continues to lag considerably behind Mrs. McCaskill in polls — where he’s been since his infamous “rape” comments in August cost him major support — Mr. Akin needs all the help he can gather from the conservative base that still holds him in high regard.

And he’s managed to gather some, with Sen. Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund coming on board last week and promising to raise hundreds of millions for him.

Several of his Missouri Republican colleagues also have reversed course after initially condemning him for his statement that victims of “legitimate” rape are unlikely to become pregnant. Sen. Roy Blunt endorsed him last week, followed by former Missouri Sens. Kit Bond and Jim Talent.
