President Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are in a virtual dead heat in the battleground state of Wisconsin, according to a poll released Monday.
The poll by Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling shows Mr. Obama with 49 percent of the vote in the Badger State and Mr. Romney trailing closely behind at 48 percent.

Perhaps more surprisingly, the poll shows Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin leading 48-45 in the state’s U.S. Senate race over former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson — contradicting polls that through mid-August consistently showed Mr. Thompson as the favorite.
Monday’s poll was commissioned and conducted on behalf of Democracy for America, a left-leaning political action committee founded by former Vermont governor and Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean.
Wisconsin has not gone red in a presidential race since 1984, but polling has shown the state to be a relative tossup since last month when Mr. Romney chose Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate.
