Sen. John McCain predicted on Thursday that Washington has been chastened enough by its recent ordeal that it will not let the federal government go dark again anytime soon.

“We’re not going to shut down the government again. I guarantee it,” Mr. McCain, Arizona Republican, told CNN’s “New Day.”

Mr. McCain was among senior Republicans in the Senate who criticized President Obama for failing to negotiate over government funding and the debt limit, yet didn’t appreciate a conservative-led effort to defund Obamacare since it was likely doomed for failure.

“I don’t think they’ll do this again,” he said, referring to House Republicans who have been blamed for causing the shutdown. “I certainly pray they won’t.”

Mr. McCain said Mr. Obama must now be magnanimous in victory, as the parties try to hammer out lasting fiscal reforms.

“He won, now you sit down with your adversaries and get things worked out,” he said.
