KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Sen. John McCain and George Bush held a campaign rally on Monday to … wait, wait, wait, not THAT George Bush, the one with the approval ratings in the cellar, the other one, the popular guy who jumped out of a plane on his 80th birthday.

Bush the Elder, known in this sleepy seaside town simply as 41, dropped over to the Nonantum resort hotel for a fundraiser, making him the first Bush to campaign with the Arizona senator since he locked down the Republican nomination. Curious tourists milled about in front of the hotel, not far from Bush’s summer home on Walker’s Point, snapping pictures and waiting for McCain. Exactly 33 protesters — media experts after seven years of staging protests during visits by President Bush — marched back and forth infron of the Nonantum, some chanting slogans like “John McCain — more of the same!” and the always favorite, “What’s disgusting? Union busting.”
McCain and Bush plan a joint press conference around noon, but with Sen. Barack Obama on the ground in Iraq, the media coverage of the event is unlikely to make the nightly news.
