How about them Caps? That was the reaction from the crowd at Shelly’s Back Room on Tuesday night watching the Washington Capitals come back from a 4-0 deficit to the New York Rangers to win 5-4 in overtime.

“How about them Caps,” someone said, and yes, indeed, it was worthy of such simple amazement. If there is such a thing as a gut check game in December in the NHL, the Capitals played it. They were coming off a 7-1 beatdown by the Flyers. They were playing in Madison Square Garden, where the Capitals haven’t won a game in nearly five years. They were playing a very good Rangers team that had a remarkable 10-1-1 record in overtime so far this season. And they were playing with eight players out with injuries.

Yet after falling behind 4-0, they came back to win in OT 5-4. That kind of game sends a message to the rest of the league — no lead is safe against the Capitals. It also sends a message to Caps fans — Merry Christmas. It’s the gift that looks as if it will keep on giving.
