British Chancellor Alistair Darling will repay about $1,500 worth of expenses he claimed on a South London apartment while he also was claiming expenses for his house on Downing Street, the Daily Telegraph is reporting.

Darling is the latest official to become embroiled in Britain’s ongoing expenses scandal, which has embarrassed several politicians who claimed expenses for porn movies and other inappropriate items.

Darling, the country’s No. 2 official, is speculated to be demoted by Friday.

Being in charge of his country’s finances, Darling should have known better than to charge taxpayers for his expenses.  But being a lifelong politician, he probably couldn’t stop himself from helping himself.

You know, this British political expenses scandal is starting to sound a lot like our federal bailout plan.
