President Obama has fired AmeriCorps’ inspector general after a probe found misuse of federal grants by a nonprofit group led by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, an Obama supporter, the AP is reporting.

Obama sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Joe Biden, who also serves as president of the Senate, saying he has lost confidence in Inspector General Gerald Walpin.

Walpin’s probe found that Johnson, a NBA basketball star, had used AmeriCorps grants to pay volunteers to engage in school-board political activities, run personal errands for Johnson and even wash his car, the AP reports.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican, has sent a letter to Obama asking him to explain his reasons for firing Walpin. Grassley said Walpin had identified millions of dollars in AmeriCorps funds that were wasted or misspent and “it appears he has been doing a good job.”

Is this the “change we can believe in?”  Because it kinda looks like “more of the same.”

In previous administrations, this would be the start of some scandal ending with the word “gate.”

You know, there’s a perfectly good reason for using federal funds to run personal errands and have your car washed.  It’s called the S-T-I-M-U-L-U-S!

There is a law that requires presidents to provide reasons for firing inspectors general.  It’s to keep politics out of such actions.  You remember politics, don’t you?
