BALTIMORE | Alternation wasn’t hyped up in the Pimlico Special; that was reserved for Hymn Book and Mission Impazible. But he sure earned plenty of deserved praise for winning the $300,000 race Friday afternoon.

Alternation, which paid $10.20, $5.00 and $3.80, held off a hard-charging Nehro with a head bob at the wire on the dirt track at Pimlico Race Course. He officially won by a nose.

Donnie K. Von Hemel’s horse won his first three races of 2012 and is now 4-for-4 on the year. He now has eight victories in 13 lifetime starts. Luis Quinonez has been aboard for Alternation’s past five races, including this win.

Endorsement finished third.
