Visitors to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead worry as water levels drop.
“You can see with like the difference in colors to the rocks, how high the water level used to be compared to now, so I was like yeah it’s low,” said visitor Mathieu Stubb.
The low water levels at both Lake Mead and Lake Powell have created a situation where the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation put out a proposal on the Colorado River to stave off a crisis in the river.
Under the proposal Arizona, California and Nevada would take less water from the Colorado River.
Arizona and Nevada have faced cuts before, but this proposal could lead to more significant reductions, impacting agriculture, cities, and tribes.
The proposal follows years of deadlocked negotiations among states.
The Lower Basin states could face collective cuts up to 3 million acre-feet annually through 2036. That’s about enough water to serve more than 25 million people a year.
