Maryland’s most difficult test of its season comes at the most difficult time. The Terrapins, on a three-game losing streak and the back end of a two-game road trip, are faced with going to Columbus to take on No. 5 Ohio State and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Jeremiah Smith on the Buckeyes’ homecoming.
On this edition of District of Sports, George Gerbo talks with sports anchor Jon Rudder of WCMH-TV NBC 4 in Columbus on what makes Smith so great, how Maryland quarterback Malik Washington matches up against the Buckeyes’ defense, and what Maryland’s place is in the greater consciousness of the Big Ten Conference.
Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is the conference’s leader in yards per game (306) and completion percentage (72.5%), while Malik Washington’s 257.6 yards per game ranks fifth, but the Annapolis native has thrown three pick-sixes in the last two games and leads the Big Ten with six interceptions.
The Terrapins are 0-20 under coach Mike Locksley against ranked Big Ten opponents since he took over in 2019 and 2-18 in the league across the last two-plus seasons of conference play . Most recently, the Terrapins were beaten at Nebraska 48-23, which followed a 54-3 home loss to UCLA.
