This was a competition decision, one that is part of the world of gymnastics. It prevented her from competing, so she didn't compete. Yet her legion of protectors sought to paint this as some sort of seminal moment in sports, where an athlete refuses to compete because of mental health issues, an overreaction and overcompensation to protect her legacy and defend her decision.

Paris calling: After Tokyo, Olympians hanker for 2024 Games

Barred from bringing family and friends with them to Japan, playing in empty arenas and not allowed to sightsee in Tokyo, some athletes found themselves day-dreaming about the French capital's Olympic rendezvous in 2024. If the coronavirus is tamed by then, the Paris Games could quickly become the party games. Already, there is palpable pent-up eagerness among athletes to make up for Tokyo and its disappointments.

The city of St. Paul will host a parade to celebrate Olympic champion Sunisa Lee, who took home the gold medal in the women's gymnastics all-around, as well as a silver in the team event and a bronze in the uneven bars.

Canada clinches Olympic gold in a shootout win over Sweden
