Mike Glenn grew up on Navy bases as the son of a career sailor but then decided to annoy his father and joined the Army after he graduated from high school in the Dallas area. He did a hitch as an enlisted soldier in Germany during the Cold War, where he spent a considerable amount of time in the field on maneuvers. After leaving the Army, he moved back home to northeast Texas and entered the University of Texas at Arlington where he studied history. He also took Army ROTC classes at UT Arlington and upon graduation received a commission as a Second Lieutenant. He was assigned to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss in El Paso and took his platoon to the Middle East where he fought in the Gulf War. He got into journalism after Operation Desert Storm and has worked at newspapers and magazines throughout Texas. He joined The Washington Times from the Houston Chronicle. Hegseth’s combat experience may come in handy after surprise Pentagon pick

President-elect Donald Trump's decision to name Army veteran and outspoken Fox News commentator Pete Hegseth as his choice to lead the Pentagon and the 1.3 million active duty men and women in uniform was a surprise to supporters and opponents alike, raising immediate questions over whether Mr. Trump's often-rocky relations with the military brass in his first term will be repeated in his second.

Soldiers in segregated Army fought the enemy in Korea and prejudice at home

James Thompson and his fellow soldiers from the 24th Infantry Regiment fought North Korean troops from the Yalu River to the Pusan Perimeter more than 70 years ago. but also battled racism and prejudice from their own side as members of one of the Army's segregated "Buffalo Soldiers" units.
