President Obama is inviting congressional lawmakers of both parties to the White House this week, with separate meetings for Democratic and Republican lawmakers to discuss the government shutdown and debt-ceiling impasse.

Mr. Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden will meet with House Democrats at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday, the White House said. Senate Democrats also are expected to meet with the president.

Republican lawmakers reportedly will be invited to the White House separately later this week.

The administration’s standoff with GOP House Speaker John A. Boehner entered its ninth day on Wednesday. Senate Democrats meanwhile are considering a measure that would extend the nation’s borrowing limit through the 2014 elections without conditions.
