Swimming in the final of six heats tonight at the Water Cube, Great Falls swimmer Kate Ziegler was unable to qualify for the final of the 400 freestyle in her Olympic debut. Baltimore’s Katie Hoff will go for her first Olympic gold medal around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night East Coast time. In the race before Ziegler’s, Hoff set an Olympic record (4:03.71) that had stood since 1988. But moments later, Italy’s Federica Pellegrini broke the record going 4:02.19. Meanwhile, the U.S. 4x100 relay team just set a world record in its heat race. And this was without Michael Phelps, who will swim the relay tomorrow morning.
