Michael Phelps‘ quest for eight gold medals started at 6:50 p.m. tonight. Moments later, he had an Olympic record in the 400 IM. Phelps’ winning time of 4:07.82 was the fastest qualifying time, something he said afterward he wanted to achieve. The 400 IM final is at 10:03 p.m. Sunday night EDT. Ryan Lochte was the fourth fastest qualifier in an earlier heat (4:10.33).
