No, he’s Charlie Manning, and he may not be wearing a Nats uniform much longer. The rookie left-hander just served up a towering, three-run homer to Jody Gerut (Jody Gerut!) to give the Padres a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth.
For those keeping track of these things, Manning has now been charged with three runs in four outings totaling three innings. More disturbing is the fact that he’s given up home runs this week to a pair of left-handed hitters: Adrian Gonzalez on Tuesday and now Gerut today. If you’re going to be a left-handed reliever in the big leagues, you’ve got to be able to keep left-handed hitters in the park.
It’s now a final. Trevor Hoffman, making his 900th career appearance, sets down the Nats in the ninth to preserve the 5-2 win and send Washington to Phoenix with another series loss.
