There will be a Twilight Tour of Balls Bluff this Sunday, July 6, from 6-8 p.m., led by Bill Wilkin. If you’ve never been to Balls Bluff, in Loudon County just on the outskirts of Leesburg, you are in for a treat. It’s a fairly hard to find little area, and home to the largest engagement in Loudon County, as well as the smallest US National Cemetery in the United States — 13 graves. Site of a resounding victory and the death of many Union soldiers, the walk promises to be interesting. Kim Holien’s book is probably THE definitive work on this battle, and it’s one that needs to be more widely explored.
Directions can be obtained at www.nvrpa.org/parks/ballsbluff. If you go, wear comfortable walking shoes, it’s hilly and not level ground.
If the predicted thunderstorms occur, the terrain is such that I wouldn’t want to get caught out there trying to go up and down those trails.
