\ Alex Ovechkin has signed a new contract. It’s an NHL-record $124 million for 13 years. The first six years he will make $9 million and the last seven he will make $10 million. The cap hit will be $9.54 million per year. There will be a press conference with Alex, George McPhee and Ted Leonsis at 8:30 p.m. after the season ticket holder party.\

\ 7:05 UPDATE: Alex Ovechkin just briefly addressed the crowd here at Verizon Center at a party for season ticket holders.\ \ \ “I want to say thanks to my teammates, whole organization, Ted [Leonsis], George [McPhee], the coaching staff, [former coach] Glen Hanlon,” he said. “I am proud to be with the Washington Capitals for 13 years more and our goal is to bring a Stanley Cup here.”\ \ \ Before this event started, I was standing near the players’ elevator for about an hour waiting for Alex. I did catch up with captain Chris Clark about the deal.\ \ \ “Whatever it is, obviously it is huge for us,” he said. “It is huge for the community, team, everybody because it he has outdone and outperformed his expectations to be the face of the franchise. At this point, he has gone way above any of that, and to have him locked up for however many more years is unbelievable.”\
