Democrats are trying to capitalize on Rick Santorum’s decision to drop out of the GOP presidential primary, casting it as the beginning of a two-man race between President Obama and Mitt Romney.

Under the heading “Breaking News: Santorum Drops Out,” the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent an email to supporters Tuesday afternoon asking for contributions of $3 or more “in these critical first hours of the general election” and warning that a Romney win would mean tax cuts to billionaires and oil companies and an “end to the Medicare guarantee for seniors.”

“Now that it’s clear Mitt Romney is their nominee, Republicans will focus their unified resources toward defeating President Obama,” Kevin McKeon, the DCCC’s research director, wrote in an email. “Either Mitt Romney will win, give huge tax cuts to billionaires and Big Oil, and end the Medicare guarantee for seniors — or we can elect a strong Democratic majority to back President Obama and move America forward.”
