The White House dismissed a report Tuesday that President Obama leaked word of Republican Mitt Romney wooing CIA Director Gen. David H. Petraeus to become his running mate.

“Be mindful of your sources,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said of the story on the Drudge Report. Reporters at the briefing laughed.

Drudge reported that Mr. Obama confided to a campaign supporter this week that Mr. Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, is interested in having Gen. Petraeus on the ticket.

However, Mr. Carney didn’t confirm or deny whether Gen. Petraeus has been approached by the Romney campaign; he denied that Mr. Obama has talked to anyone about the subject.

“I can say with absolute confidence that such an assertion [has] never been uttered by the president,” Mr. Carney told reporters. “And again, be mindful of your sources.”

Asked whether Gen. Petraeus would make a good vice president, Mr. Carney replied, “General Petraeus was an excellent general and is … currently serving very well at the Central Intelligence Agency.”
