The South Carolina Republican Party released the final tally of delegates won in its Jan. 21 primary, and Newt Gingrich dominated, winning 23 of the state’s 25 delegates to the nominating convention.
In the past these contests were winner-take-all, but under new rules the delegates are split with the overall winner getting 11 delegates, and then delegates awarded for winning in each of the congressional districts. Mitt Romney’s two delegates came by virtue of winning the state’s 1st congressional district.

The party also said that turnout set a new record, with 605,710 voters casting ballots — well in excess of the prediction, and topping 2000’s record of 573,101. In 2008, just 445,499 people voted in the GOP’s contest.
